Rethinking required about the Prize distribution at Varshikotsav

Our Varshikotsav  is going to be celebrated in a couple of weeks time. Many bright students of the Samaj will get the prizes. As usual, there will be chaos at the time of prize distribution. As usual, there will be no time to call every winner on the stage to honour them as more & more time is spent by the various dignitaries present on the dais in delivering their lectures

This is happening every year no matter who (Samaj or Yuvak Mandal) do it. Organisers are bound to fail in their mission as there is a technical hitch. Though the programme is named as કેળવણી પારિતોષિક વિતરણ સમારંભ very little time is provided for પારિતોષિક વિતરણ that too in an undisciplined way.

It is not that working committee members want to disgrace anyone or they themselves want to get disgraced but the problem lies in the system. If you look at the list of donors , there are more than 100 names both with Yuvak Mandal & Samaj who have given , by today's standard , small donation interest income from which shall be distributed as prizes to bright students of Samaj. These prizes  have to be given to specific class of students as per the wish of the donors. As such there are more categories for prize distribution. This brings in imbalance in the prizes distributed amongst the bright students. For example a 10th standard boy gets bigger prize than a M.B.B.S. doctor.

Gujarati Language is finding less favour with the current lot of parents so they send their kids to English schools. As a result there are many claimants in the English category than Gujarati category which makes Gujarati student getting bigger prize money than English learning student. Further there is very less competition in Guarati category as compared to English category. Not only that brighter students of English category are many times deprived of prizes all together.

What is the way out ?

In our opinion, all the donations towards educational prize distribution should be merged into a single pool and all the prize winning students of what ever category they belong should share the prize money equally from the interest income arising out of this pool. As a result all the covers of prize money will become equal and they will not relate to a particular winner or a particular class of student. So who ever comes on stage in what ever order will get the cover from the dignitary  without  any tension for the organisers and with loss of very little time.

This requires careful & intelligent handling of different donors or their kins to make them understand the difficulty we face and also how  conditions have changed from the time when the donations were given and those that  prevail now.

It may look difficult at first sight but it is worth trying to make the lives of the working committee members easy and honour of the bright students of Samaj graceful.

When you were 1 year old, she fed you and bathed you.
You thanked her by crying all night long

When you were 2 years old, she taught you to walk.
You thanked her by running away when she called.

When you were 3 years old, she made all your meals with Love.
You thanked her by tossing the plate on the floor.

When you were 4 years old, she gave you some crayons.
You thanked her by coloring the dining room table.

When you were 5, she dressed you for the holidays.
You thanked her by plopping into the nearest.

When you were 40, she called to remind you of a relatives birthday.
You thanked her by saying you were really busy right now.

When you were 50, she fell ill and needed you to take care of her.
You thanked her by reading about the burden parents become to their children.

And then, one day, she quietly died.
And everything you never did came crashing down like thunder on YOUR HEART.

If she's still around, never forget to love Her more than ever.

About Dhanteras

Dhanteras falls on the thirteenth day of the month of ashwin. The word "Dhan" means wealth. As such this day of the five-day diwali festival has a great importance for the rich mercantile community of western India. Houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with lovely traditional motifs of rangoli designs to welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights. On this auspicious day women purchase some gold or silver or at least one or two new utensils. Pooja is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans"-devotional songs- are sung in praise of Goddess Lakshmi.

Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi, and takes place two days before Diwali, in honour of Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu.

The legend of Samudramanthan is at the heart of these celebrations. Lord Indra was cursed by sage Durvasa that “The pride of wealth has entered his head and let Lakshmi leave him." On account of Durvasa's curse, Lakshmi left Indra and went away. As Lakshmi is the goddess of power, bravery, enthusiasm and radiance left, Devendra's life became miserable. The demons that were waiting for such an opportunity invaded heaven, defeated Indra. He lost his kingdom and hid out of the sight of the demons.

A number of years passed. Indra's teacher Brihaspati thought of finding a way out for Indra's troubles. He went with the gods to Brahma, who went to Vishnu, A way was found out of it. The sea of milk was to be churned. It was a very difficult job. Therefore the friendship of the demons and get their assistance was required. Mandara Mountain was a churning rod and Vasuki, the king of the serpents, as a rope.

When the sea will be churned ambrosia will be produced. The gods must drink it and become immortal. It will then be possible for gods to defeat the demons. When the sea is churned, Lakshmi who has disappeared will appear again. Her grace will be bestowed. The clever Brihaspati managed to strike a friendship with the demons who agreed in the hope of getting ambrosia and wealth. After initial difficulties posed by the sinking of mount Mandara into the milky sea which was set right by Lord Vishnu who took the form of a tortoise and hoisted it on his back, the churning started.

First, Kalakuta, a dreadful poison was produced which Lord Shiva drank much to the relief of the gods and demons. Due to Vishnu's continued encouragement, gods and demons continued churning the sea. Then a horse by name Uchaishravas, Kalpavriksha had the power to grant what is wished, and Kamdhenu and other celestial articles took shape. When the sea continued to be churned the Apsara were born.

After that in the midst of the waves of the sea of milk, a goddess with heavenly looks came into view. She was standing on a fully blossomed lotus. Wearing a lotus garland in the neck, she was holding a lotus in her hand. She was attractive and was radiantly smiling, she was Lakshmi.

The sages began reciting hymns in praise of her. Gandharvas sang. Apsaras danced. The elephants on either side sprinkled sacred holy Ganga water on the goddess and bathed her. Because the elephants sprinkled holy water on her, she acquired the name of Gajalakshmi. Because she was born in the sea of milk, she was called Samudratanya. The king of the sea appeared in his natural form and comforted Lakshmi as a daughter. He presented her with attractive clothes and jewels. He handed to her a garland of lotus flowers. While everybody was looking in surprise, Lakshmi put the garland around the neck of Vishnu. Then she looked at Indra kindly, he acquired an extraordinary radiance.

The gods and demons continued to churn the ocean for Amrut or nectar, Finally Dhanavantri emerged carrying a jar of the elixir (ambrosia). Both the asuras and the devas wanted the ambrosia, but finally Vishnu managed to give the immortal nectar to the gods and the asuras where defeated. Thus the churning of the ocean resulted in the immortality of the devas and was the reason for Lakshmi's emergence.

Another interesting story about this day is of the sixteen year old son of King Hima. As per his horoscope he was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband’s boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs. When Yam, the god of death arrived there in the guise of a serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the prince’s chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away.

Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "YAMADEEPDAAN" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of death.

Ayushya Karma -(Determination of Age and Life)

He who has earned the Ayushya (age) Karma of the
Devagathi (divine world), becomes an angel or a Deva. He who has earned the Ayushya Karma of the
Manushya Gathi (mankind), becomes a human being. He who has earned the Ayushya Karma of the
Tiryancha Gathi (world of birds, animals, plants)
becomes a bird or an animal or a plant. He who has earned the Ayushya Karma of the
Naraka Gathi (hell), goes to hell. He who strictly follows the discipline and rules of
religion, earns the life of a Deva,

He who is charitable, merciful and performs the
religious activities, earns the life of a human being.
He who cheats and deceives others, earns
the life of a bird or an animal or a plant. He who is violent, criminal and kills another, goes to Hell.
Owing to this Karma
one has to be born, has to live and die in this world. The age limit in the next birth is determined in this life.
Once it is fixed it cannot be changed.
One has to be born in the next life only
in that world as determined by Ayushya Karma.
One has to live there for the period fixed by
Ayushya Karma and then die.
So goes the cycle of birlh and death.

VEDINIYA KARMA (Controller of physical pleasure and pain)

There are two types of Vedaniya Karma.
• 'Shata Vedaniya' - feeling well.
• 'Ashata Vedaniya' - feeling ill.
Shata Vedaniya gives one pleasure.
Ashata Vedaniya gives one pain.
On account of Ashata Vedaniya Karma,
one becomes a victim of Cancer, Cholera,
Typhoid, T. B., Cardiac troubles etc. etc.
One gets fever, headache, stomachache,
ulcers and other types of ailments.

One earns the Shata Vedaniya Karma by making others happy, helping others,

GOTRA KARMA (Controller of high and low rank in society)

In the world: Someone is born high. Someone is born low.
Why ? Do you know ? It is due to this Gotra Karma. By the influence of high Gotra Karma, one becomes
forward and high in society.
By the influence of low Gotra Karma, one becomes
backward and low in society. By the high Gotra Karma, one gets reputation,
power, respect in society.

Owing to low Gotra. Karma, one gets blame,
contempt and insult in society.
A high or a low place in society
is the result of this Karma.
One can be high as well as low in the same life
at different periods.
How does one become bound by this Karma ?
He is bound by this Karma by being proud of his physical beauty, power, caste, intelligence,
knowledge and wealth.
This Karma also binds one who despises others
and treats others with contempt.

GYANAVARANA KARMA (Concealment of our knowledge)

Some are more intelligent, Some are less intelligent. Some are foolish,
Some are Stupid.
What is the reason for this ?
The reason is Gyanavarana Karma.
Some are clever in their studies, Some are dull in their studies, Some do not learn anything.
What is the reason for this ?
The reason is Gyanavarana Karma,

This Karma does not allow us to know
things that are far away.
This Karma does not allow us to know
the minds of others.
This Karma does not allow us to know
all about the world.
In spite of your hard work, you are not able
to remember a lesson or a poem; why ?
Though you know the answers well,
you are not able to give them; why ? Though you are eager to understand a subject
or a talk, you are not able to understand it; why ? For all these, the reason is Gyanavarana Karma

Darshanavarana Karma (an obstruction to our seeing)

 This Karma
Diminishes the power of the eyes to see objects.
Diminishes the power of the ears to hear sounds.
Diminishes the power of the nose to smell fragrance.
Diminishes the power of the tongue to taste eatables.
Diminishes the power of the skin to feel the touch of objects.
You are not able to see the other side of the wall.
You are not able to see the other side of the hill.
You are not able to see beyond the clouds.
You are not able lo see anything beyond the world.
For all these Darshanavarana Karma is responsible.

On account of this Karma Men sleep
Some sleep lying down. Some sleep sitting.
Some sleep even standing.
While in deep sleep,
Some one walks.
Some one eats with relish.
Some one suffocates another. Some one even kills another.
But when he wakes up. he is completely ignorant of what he did.
Such strange things are due to
Darshanavarana Karma.
