Lord Mahavir & Diwali

ભગવાન મહાવીર અને દિવાળી
All the Jains celebrate the festival of Diwali with joy. Diwali is celebrated on the new-moon day of Kartik. On the night of that day, Bhagwan Mahavira attained Nirvan or deliverance and a state of absolute bliss. The Lord discarded the body and the bondage of all Karmas on that night, at Pawapuri In Uttara-puraana written by Acharya GunBhadra (7th or 8th century) it is mentioned that in the month of Kartika, krashna paksha, svati nakshatra and on the night of the 14th (dawn of the amavasya), lord Mahavira became a Siddha (attained nirvana). Bhagwan Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankaras, attained Nirvana on this day at Pavapuri on Chaturdashi of Kartika:
कत्तिय-किण्हे चौदसिपच्चुसे सादिणामनक्खत्ते|
पवाए णयरिये एक्को विरेसरो सिद्धो ||
Diwali festival was first time mentioned in Harivansha Purana written by Acharya Jinasena, and composed in the Shaka Samvat era in the year 705. Acharya Jinasena mentions that Bhagavan Mahavira, attained nirvana at Pavapuri in the month of Kartika, Krashna paksh, during swati nakshatra, at the time of dawn. In Harivamsha-Purana sloka 19 and in sloka 20 he writes that the gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Since that time the people of Bharat celebrate the famous festival of "Dipalika" to worship the Jinendra on the occasion of his nirvana.

Tatastuh lokah prativarsham-aadarat

Prasiddha-deepalikaya-aatra bharate,
Samudyatah poojayitum jineshvaram
Jinendra-nirvana vibhuti-bhaktibhak.
It means, the gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Since that time, the people of Bharat celebrate the famous festival of "Dipalika" to worship the Lord Mahavira on the occasion of his nirvana.
An ancient mention of Lord Mahavira's nirvana and lightening of lampsoccurs in Kalpasutra of BhadraBahu, v. 123, "When Lord Mahavira came to Madhyam Pava for his last varshavas, it was the fourth month of the rainy season, seventh paksha, and krashna of kartik. It was then the last day of krashna of kartik. That night Lord Mahavira attained nirvana." Kalpasutra mentions that due to the presense of gods, the night was illuminated. It further says "that on the amavasya night, 16 gana-kings, 9 Malla and 9 Lichchhavi, of Kasi and Kosal, illuminted their doors. They said: "The light of knowledge is gone, we will make light of ordinary matter". Bhagavan Mahavira discarded the body and the bondage of all Karmas on that night of Diwali, at Pavapuri and attained Mukti or deliverance. Thus we have been celebrating Diwali with lights sine the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. It is celebrated with a special worship the next morning. In the early morning after the day of Diwali, Ganadhar Gautam Swami, the first disciple of Lord Mahavira attained absolute enlightenment. This could be another probable cause for celebrating the Diwali as the festivals of lights.
Vira Nirvana Samvat: The Jain year starts with Pratipada following Diwali. Vira Nirvana Samvat 2538 starts with Diwali on October 27, 2011.
ભગવાન મહાવીર નિર્વાણ સ્થળ પાવાપુરી

Pawapuri or Pavapuri also called Apapuri is a prominent Sidha Ksetra Jaina Tirtha situated 8 kms from Bihar and 31 kilometres from Rajgir. By road it is 87 kilometres from Patna. It is located on Bahktiapur Rajgir railway line. Buses and taxies also run from Rajgir to Pawapri.

During ancient times about 2600 year ago, Pawapuri was the part of Magadha Kingdom and was called "Madyama Pawa" or "Apawapuri", Ajatshatru, the son of King Shrenik who was one of the greatest disciples of Lord Mahavira was the King of Magadh during the lifetime of Mahavir. During the reign of Ajatshatru King Hastipal was the King of Pawapuri. When Lord Mahavira came to Pawapuri he stayed in King Hastipal's "Rajikshala".

Having attained omniscience (Kevala- Gnana) on the bank of Rju-kula and after preaching the principle of Jainism through his divine voice (Divya-dhvani), Lord Mahavira toured over different areas of the country and propounded the religious doctrines. Afterwards he reached Pavapuri and seated himself on a clan or pure slab of stone in a park studded with many ponds. He did not move out for two days; and plunged in pure meditation (sukla- dhyana). He quitted the mortal coil and became a Siddha in the last quarter of the night of the 14th day of the black half of the month of Kartika.

There are five main temples in Pawapuri - the Jal Mandir, the Gaon Mandir, the Samosaran, the New Samosaran and apart from these temples there is a Digambar Jain Mandir near Jal mandir.

Jal mandir is a temple in the middle of a lake blooming with lotuses. The main deity of the beautiful temple is a very old "Charan Paduka" of Lord Mahavira. It marks the spot where the mortal remains of Lord Mahavira were cremated. It is believed that this temple was built by King Nandivardhan, elder brother of Lord Mahavira. Jal Mandir is built in the shape of "Vimana" and there is a stone bridge about 600 feet in length across it from the bank to the temple.

Lord Mahavira attained nirvana in a park, near Pavapuri, round about which there were many pounds or lakes. At present the site of the nirvana of Mahavira is accepted near Bihar-Sherif where a magnificent Jaina temple stands in the centre of a big lake. This is accepted as the tirtha-ksetra on all hands. Both the sects, Digambra and Svetambra, have voluntarily accepted this place as the spot of the nirvana of Mahavira. A marble temple, the Jalmandir, was later built in the middle of the tank, where Lord. Mahavira attained salvation. Another beautiful Jain temple of white marble called Samosharan is located at this place. Bhagwawan Mahavira had delivered his sermon here.

Ford Car Door Edge Protector

With this pop-out door edge protector, car door scratches and dents may soon be a thing of the past.

Here’s how it works: The spring-loaded protector is mounted on the back edge of each door. When the door is opened, the rubber protector flips into position and covers the door edge. The cover minimizes damage if the door edge hits a wall or barrier, and helps protect body panels of cars parked next to you. When the door is closed, a pushpin in the front edge of the door pulls on an interior cable to retract the edge cover. It was developed by engineers at Ford Europe, where roads are narrow and parking spaces are tight. Ford officials in the United States say they have no plans right now to offer the door protector in the US. But they said they will watch to see how popular it is in Europe and might change their minds later.

Tomato Story

A Jobless man applied for the position of
'office boy' at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the
floor as a test.

'You are employed' he said.
Give me your e-mail address

and
I'll send you the application to fill in,
as well as
date when you may start.

 The man replied
'But I don't have a computer, neither an email'.
'I'm sorry', said the HR manager.
If you don't have an email,
that means you do not exist.
And who doesn't exist,
cannot have the job.'
The man left with no hope at all.
He didn't know what to do,
with only $10 in his pocket.
He then decided to go to the supermarket
and
buy a 10Kg tomato crate.
He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round.
In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times,
and returned home with $60.
The man realized that he can survive by this way,
and started to go everyday earlier, and return late.
Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday.
Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck,
and
then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.
5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers
in the US .
He started to plan his family's future,
and decided to have a life insurance.
He called an insurance broker,
and chose a protection plan.
When the conversation was concluded
the broker asked him his email.
The man replied,
'I don't have an email.'
The broker answered curiously,
'You don't have an email,
and
yet have succeeded to build an empire.
Can you imagine what you could have been
if you had an e mail?!!'
The man thought for a while and replied,
'Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!'
Moral of the story
Moral 1
Internet is not the solution to your life.
Moral 2
If you don't have an Internet,
and
work hard,
you can be a millionaire.
Moral 3
If you received this message by email, you are closer to being an office boy/girl, than a millionaire...........
P.S - Do not forward this email back to me,
I am closing my email account
going to sell tomatoes!!!

Dussera :

To day we celebrate the festival of Dussera or Vijayadashmi which is about Goddess Durga slaying Mahishasura and Lord Ram killing Ravan. While we seem to celebrate all Indian festivals with lot of enthusiasm and gusto, very few of us truly understand the underlying meaning of Dussera.

There are many myths and stories attached to the day and India being so diverse, every place has their own version. Author and mythologist Devdutt Patnaik says , " Not many know that it is part of harvest festival and all the harvest festivals are associated with "violence & killing" as without destroying the forests , we can not create fields and hence food.  Also the part that Navratri (another name fro Dussera or rather the nights preceding it) occurs twice a year, in spring and autumn, reminding us of India's two agricultural cycles, Kharif & Rabi.

Happy Dussera to all the members of Samaj.

High-Tech Restaurant Without Waiters

Gone are the days of slow service and surly waiters at an automated restaurant in Germany.

Diners at the newly-opened restaurant in Nuremberg can now place their order using a touch-screen computer. Their meal then arrives via an elaborate spiral rail network that descends from the second floor kitchen. While the restaurant has a futuristic concept, the food served there is traditional, and it seems to be a hit with diners.

Lies, Lies, Lies

To-day is Gandhi Jayanti. 142nd Birth Anniversary of Gandhiji.

All of a sudden Govt. of India has come to life to remeber him on this day. Following are the messages of Gandhiji used by various ministries of GOI in today's advertisements in various news papers. This remembrance is for just one day, from tomorrow they will start to live their ungandhian ways.

1) "I believe that where there is pure and active love for the poor there is God also.
I see God in every thread that I draw on the spinning wheel" - Mahatma Gandhi (Young India, 20-05-1926)
(Inserted by : Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.)

2) "Rural Electrification will fulfill the dream of every Indian"-Mahatma Gandhi
(Inserted by : Ministry of Power)

3) "I shall work for an India in which the poorest shall feel that it is their country, in whose making they have an effective voice"-M. K. Gandhi

(Inserted by : Ministry of Social Justice and Employment.)

4) "Ever since I have grown up, I have never desired to smoke and have always regarded the habit of smoking as barbarous, dirty and harmful. I have never understood why there is such a rage for smoking throughout the world. I can not bear to travel in a compartment full of people smoking. I become choked."-Gandhiji wrote about a century ago.
(Inserted by : Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.)

5)  On the mahatma's 142nd Birth Anniversary, we re-dedicate our efforts to his cherished goals of eradicating hunger and empowering consumers

(Inserted by : Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.)

6) "A civilization can be judged by the way it treats its minorities"- M.K.Gandhi

(Inserted by : Ministry of Minority Affairs.)

7) "The highest form of freedom carries with it the greatest measure of discipline and humility."-M.K.Gandhi
(Inserted by : Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.)

8) "Infinite striving to be the best is man's duty ; it is its own reward" - Mahatma Gandhi
(Inserted by : Ministry of Steel.)

9) Paying homage to Father of Nation
(Inserted by : Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.)

10) "An education which does not teach us to discriminate between good and bad, to assimilate the one and eschew the other, is a misnomer"- Mahatma Gandhi
(Inserted by : Ministry of Human Resource Development.)

11) "The duty of motherhood requires qualities which man does not possess. The art of bringing up infants of the race is her special and sole prorogative. Without her care the race must become extinct" - Mahatma Gandhi
(Inserted by : Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.)

Even after nearly 65 years of independence, what was envisioned by the father of nation has not  been achieved, on the contrary  we have failed miserably and retreated back from where we were.GOI has spent lakhs of ruppes on these advertisements and from tomorrow they will do all those things which are not required to be pursued.

Incidentally ,Lalbahadur Shashtri's birth anniversary also falls today but there is not a single mention of the late prime minister any where in any of the news papers. We pay our homage to him and his excellent work during the short period of his premiership.

TEN WAYS TO PREVENT A HEART ATTACK

A healthier lifestyle can go a long way and make a huge difference when it comes to preventing heart disease. Read on to know the 10 steps towards a healthy heart

By Dr Aashish Contractor

Lifestyle changes characterised by rising incomes, sedentary jobs, and high levels of stress are some of the factors that have contributed to the high incidence of cardio-vascular disease. In India, cardio vascular diseases are responsible for one-third of all deaths. Controlling the risk factors and adopting a healthier lifestyle can make a big difference when it comes to this disease.

1 Eat right

Avoid saturated fats and trans-fats as they raise the bad cholesterol level (LDL). Check the labels of food items before consuming them and avoid anything that is ‘partially hydrogenated’ as this is a clear indicator that it contains trans-fat. Cut out red meat from your diet and add fruits and vegetables instead. However, not all fats are bad for the body, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that include Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential for good health and help protect against risk of heart attacks and strokes. Food items that contain good fats include almond, walnut, avocado, tuna and flax seed.

2 Choose your oil wisely

Cooking oil needs to be chosen carefully to maintain heart health and optimum levels of cholesterol in the body. Use oils with a higher monounsaturated fat content and lower saturated fat content, such as canola oil, olive oil and groundnut oil. Do not reuse your cooking oil as this can result in the creation of trans-fats.

3 Take a walk

Exercise helps protect against heart disease and several forms of cancer. But besides regular exercise every extra step you take during the day builds up your ‘health balance’, and helps prevent disease. Try and factor in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (such as walking) in your daily life. Exercise burns the excess fats in the body and helps control the blood cholesterol. It will also reduce stress and normalise the pulse rate.

4 Control body weight

Studies have shown that exercise programs and healthy eating lead to improved health parameters, even in the absence of weight loss. However, these studies should not be seen to be a license to be overweight. Body weight is directly related to eating behaviours and the type of food being consumed. Depending on your height and age, it’s advisable to figure out your ideal weight and then make an effort to achieve or maintain that.

5 Be relaxed

Stress has several negative effects on our body, and should be kept under control. While, some stress is important it is vital to not allow it to completely take over our lives. Take up a hobby that helps you relax. It could be something as simple as cooking or gardening but make sure you take some time out for yourself.

6 Blood pressure under control

Blood pressure is an important measure for prevention of heart attacks. Your heart has to work harder to push blood through your body when your blood pressure is high. This causes your heart to enlarge and can speed up atherosclerosis (deposition of fats inside the arteries). In case you suffer from this condition, make sure you take your medications on time. Avoiding excessive consumption of sodium can also help reduce high blood pressure.

7 Stop smoking

A smoker’s risk of having a heart attack is more than twice that of a non-smoker. Smoking speeds up the development of plaque in the arteries. It also reduces the level of the good cholesterol (known as HDL), and increases the stickiness of blood cells causing blood clots inside the arteries. 8 Sugar’s not so sweet If you have diabetes, keep the blood sugar under ‘tight control’. Remember, physical activity is the best way to burn off excess sugar in the blood. Those with diabetes are more prone to heart disease, especially women.

9 All in the family

Heart disease has a strong genetic component. If your parents or siblings have had heart disease you need to be doubly careful and start getting yourself checked at an early age. However, just because you may have a family history does not mean you will definitely develop heart disease, but your risk is higher.

10 get yourself checked

We all feel that it will ‘never happen to me’, but heart disease is an equal opportunity killer. Unfortunately most of the risk factors for heart disease are silent – they give you no warning of their presence. You should get your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and weight checked on a regular basis. Ideally, these tests should start at the age of 15, and then be repeated periodically. If you have crossed 40, it’s also a good idea to undergo a stress test.
