MAY HIS SOUL REST IN ETERNAL PEACE
Whom will you marry your son/daughter to ?
If you look back a few decades, two pregnant ladies would make an understanding to get married their progeny if both of them are born of different sex. There only thing that mattered most was nobility of families. In fact, economically, most of the families were at par with each other so there was no importance given to monetary aspect.
Then times changed. people started coming out of their villages to bigger cities like Mumbai , Calcutta or Madras. There they got opportunities to advance economically. So new alignments unintentionally started in the samaj. People started to look for alliance of their children in the same category they were in. Still, people would not go out of Samaj. Not only that members would take pride in saying that their children got married in the samaj itself.
Again times changed. Today people are frowned upon when they say they have married their children in our samaj only. People have started going out to other samaj for they have become more selective and they do not mind going to unknown families.
Thus on one side change in economical stability has changed the perception about marriage. On the other side, TV has also played a major role. Good looking faces of actresses and robust & chiseled bodies of actors are shown which has raised the minimum requirement standard of boys & girls. They do not worry about nobility of the opposite family but go after their size & shape. Marriage has become a game as a result divorce has become a normal thing of life thanks to TV. What we forget here is those on TV are specially selected and prepared for the show. The money they spend on make up per episode is much more than the monthly incomes of many of the families of samaj. Have you ever thought how many good looking faces are there in all the gujarati communities taken together ? What are your chances of getting those good looking faces for your child ? Over and above this what is the guarantee that the so called good looking person will match with your family temperament-wise ?
Age as such does not play any part in marriage but 95% of boys will decline to marry a girl elder to him.They will go and consult a jyotishi and believe his words for happy marriage but will not see what is apparently visible.They try to find solace in the unknown. Have you ever seen a couple happily married and not quarreling ? Intimacy & closeness only breeds contempt. We will not worry about testing our blood for thalesemia which can play havoc in your life as your progeny will suffer life threatening disease and you will be spending lot of money , hard earned, on treatment of your child. You will not worry about financial disparity of your wife's/husband's family with your family which is likely to create sparks in the longer run as after initial phase, real problems come up and difference in life styles can create unforeseen problems in life. Educational compatibility also is compromised against looks many times.
To add fuel to fire, the middle man has vanished so new arrangements are to be worked out. A simple way out is to circulate the bio data of boy/girl at right places. Good advertisement will work wonders for both parents & boy/girl as getting right person is equally important for parents as well as boy/girl. New trend is giving the information on specially developed marriage sites for a fee or to display the information on our blog free of charge. But people are afraid of putting the information on blog . By not putting enough efforts in publishing your child's bio data, you are depriving the child of an opportunity of finding right person in his/her life.
Thus very vital things for marriage to work are ignored and trivial matters are given undue importance. If samaj really wants to sort the problem and would want to help parents of samaj in getting right boy or girl for their child, the children of the society should meet more & more to understand each other. Simply arranging Milan Samarohs for Yuvaks & Yuvatis will not suffice. Samaj should arrange for a day or 2 days trip for marriageable Boys & Girls. This is an Indian version of Dating. Once boys see girls for longer duration unlike meeting in a hotel for 20-25 minutes, they will be having a clear cut idea and may find interest in the girl he is interacting with. More over the boys/girls will know what type of spouse they can expect when they see many boys/ girls at a time. This seems to be a strategy which may work for good of the community. But for that you have to think out of the box. Be bold, be different.
Our samaj has to be a trend setter in this regard. There are many generous members in the samaj who do not mind contributing for trip of a day or two. Instead of giving the donation for Yuvak/Yuvati Samaroh, they should sponsor the trip. Is any body ready for that ? Who will come forward to experiment?

Message to Working Committee, Trust Board, Bhandol Samiti
Narayana Murthy,
Nonexecutive chairman and chief mentor,
Infosys Technologies Ltd was asked the question
How would you describe a great leader?
His reply was :
A great leader is one who is not only good in creating a vision, creating the big picture, but also ensuring that he goes into the nitty-gritty, into the details of making sure that the vision is actually translated into reality through excellence of execution. In other words, great leaders have great vision, great imagination, great ideas, but they also implement those ideas through hard work, commitment and flawless execution. In doing so, they motivate thousands of people.-
We hope who is who of the samaj are listening.

Diwali & New Year Wishes from JAYSHREE & BHAVIN MAHENDRAKUMAR GANDHI
Death
Diwali - A Jain View Point
Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism, just like Buddha Purnima, the date of Buddha's Nirvana, is for Buddhists as Christmas is for Christians. Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankaras, attained Nirvana or Moksha on this day at Pavapuri on Oct. 15, 527 BC, on Chaturdashi of Kartika, as Tilyapannatti of Yativrashaba from the sixth century states:
Mahavira is responsible for establishing the Dharma followed by Jains even today. According to tradition, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam Swami also attained complete knowledge (Kevalgyana) on this day, thus making Diwali one of the most important Jain festivals.
Mahavira attained his nirvana at the dawn of the amavasya (new moon). According to the Kalpasutra by Acharya Bhadrabahu, 3rd century BC, many gods were present there, illuminating the darkness[8]. The following night was pitch black without the light of the gods or the moon. To symbolically keep the light of their master's knowledge alive:
16 Gana-kings, 9 Malla and 9 Lichchhavi, of Kasi and Kosal, illuminated their doors. They said: "Since the light of knowledge is gone, we will make light of ordinary matter" ("गये से भवुज्जोये, दव्वुज्जोयं करिस्समो").
Dipavali was first mentioned in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Mahavira. In fact, the oldest reference to Diwali is a related word, dipalikaya, which occurs in Harivamsha-Purana, written by Acharya Jinasena [9] and composed in the Shaka Samvat era in the year 705.
tatastuh lokah prativarsham-araat ako
prasiddha-deepalikaya-aatra bharate
samudyatah poojayitum jineshvaram
jinendra-nirvana vibhuti-bhaktibhak
Translation: The gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Since that time, the people of Bharat celebrate the famous festival of "Dipalika" to worship the Jinendra (i.e. Lord Mahavira) on the occasion of his nirvana.
Dipalikaya roughly translates as "light leaving the body". Dipalika, which can be roughly translated as "splenderous light of lamps", is used interchangeably with the word "Diwali".
The way Jains celebrate Diwali is different in many respects. There is a note of asceticism in whatever the Jains do, and the celebration of Diwali is not an exception. The Jains celebrate Diwali during the month of Kartik for three days. During this period, among the Shvetambaras, devoted Jains observe fasting and chant the Uttaradhyayan Sutra, which contain the final pravachans of Lord Mahavira, and meditate upon him. Some Jains visit Pavapuri in Bihar where he attained Nirvan. In may temples special laddus are offered particularly on this day.
Vira Nirvana Samvat: The Jain year starts with Pratipada following Diwali. Vira Nirvana Samvat 2536 starts with Diwali 2009. The Jain businesspeople traditionally started their accounting year from Diwali. The relationship between the Vir and Shaka era is given in Titthogali Painnaya and Dhavalaa by Acharya Virasena:
पंच य मासा पंच य वास छच्चेव होन्ति वाससया|
परिणिव्वुअस्स अरिहितो तो उप्पन्नो सगो राया||
Thus the Nirvana occurred 605 years and 5 months before the Saka era.
On 21 October 1974 the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsava was celebrated by all the Jain throughout India[1].

Dhanteras
In the word Dhanteras, "Dhan" stands for wealth. On Dhanteras, the "Owl" form of the Goddess Laxmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. Dhanteras holds special significance for the business community due to customary purchases of precious metals on this day
Legends
A very interesting story about Dhanteras Festival says that once the sixteen year old son of King Hima was doomed to die by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage as per his horoscope. On that particular fourth day of his marriage his young wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and lots of silver coins in a big heap at the entrance of her husband's boudoir and lighted innumerable lamps all over the place. And she went on telling stories and singing songs.
When Yama, the god of Death arrived there in the guise of a Serpent his eyes got blinded by that dazzle of those brilliant lights and he could not enter the Prince's chamber. So he climbed on top of the heap of the ornaments and coins and sat there whole night listening to the melodious songs. In the morning he quietly went away. Thus the young wife saved her husband from the clutches of death. Since then this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "Yamadeepdaan" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yam, the god of Death.
According to another popular legend, when the gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrit or nectar, Dhanavantri (the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu) emerged carrying a jar of the elixir on the day of Dhanteras.
Preparations
To mark the auspicious day, houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights.
Traditions
On Dhanteras Hindus consider it auspicious to purchase gold or silver articles or at least one or two new utensils. It is believed that new “Dhan” or some form of precious metal is a sign of good luck. "Laxmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny Diyas of clay are lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. "Bhajans"-devotional songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are also sung.
Celebrations
Dhanteras is celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm. "Lakshmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. Bhajans - devotional songs - in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and "Naivedya" of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar custom in Maharashtra to lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offer as Naivedya.
In villages, cattle are adorned and worshiped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south India, cows are offered particularly special veneration because they are thought of as incarnations of the Goddess Lakshmi.

Diwali Festival Details
Diwali in Gujarat is celebrated From aaso vad Agyaras (11th day from full/no moon) to dev Diwali people lit the diyas (now uses lamp series also) to decorate the house, which protects them from evil spirits as believed.
Agyaras: (Aso vad 11)
Gujaratis begin their Diwali celebrations before Dhan Teras, on the 11th day of aaso. The day is devoted to preparing the choicest snacks and dry fruits, to wish new year to relatives & neighbours.
Vagh Baras: (Aso vad 12)
This is also known as Govatsa dwadashi and Guru Dwadashi. On this day the cow and calf are worshipped. Vagh here refers to repaying one's financial debts. Therefore people clear their account ledgers (khata) today and do not enter into new transactions, using new ledgers until after Labh Pancham. Vagh baras is also celebrated in a unique fashion in some Dhodia villages where, men colour themselves in stripes representing the Vagh and others as plain white or other colours denoting cattle. The tiger chases the cattle. Finally at the end of the sport the village inhabitants eat food together at a common place and celebrate.
Dhanteras: (Aso vad 13)
Most community worship the goddess of wealth called "LAXMI" by performing puja. Material wealth in the form of gold jewelry & money (or old coins/Diamonds) often represent wealth in these worship ceremonies. Gujaratis believe money spent on this day will bring prosperity to their family and home during the coming year.
Kali Chaudash: (Aso vad 14)
Kali means black or mahakali (goddess who wins over black magic). Chaudash means 14. So the natives prepare Vada to Hanumanji and get protection from ghosts & evils spirits. Tantrics go to the crematorium (called samshan in Hindi) to get powerful results.

Angina Pain - Beginning of Heart Diseases
What Is Angina?
Angina (an-JI-nuh or AN-juh-nuh) is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when an area of your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina may feel like pressure or squeezing in your chest. The pain also may occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It can feel like indigestion.
Angina itself isn't a disease. Rather, it's a symptom of an underlying heart problem. Angina is usually a symptom of coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease.
CAD occurs when a fatty material called plaque (plak) builds up on the inner walls of the coronary arteries. These arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to your heart. When plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis (ATH-er-o-skler-O-sis).
Atherosclerosis
Plaque causes the coronary arteries to become narrow and stiff. The flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle is reduced. This causes pain and can lead to a heart attack.
Types of Angina
The three types of angina are stable, unstable, and variant (Prinzmetal's). Knowing how the types are different is important. This is because they have different symptoms and require different treatment.
Stable Angina
Stable angina is the most common type. It occurs when the heart is working harder than usual. Stable angina has a regular pattern. If you know you have stable angina, you can learn to recognize the pattern and predict when the pain will occur.
The pain usually goes away in a few minutes after you rest or take your angina medicine.
Stable angina isn't a heart attack, but it makes a heart attack more likely in the future.
Unstable Angina
Unstable angina doesn't follow a pattern. It can occur with or without physical exertion and isn't relieved by rest or medicine.
Unstable angina is very dangerous and needs emergency treatment. It's a sign that a heart attack may happen soon.
Variant (Prinzmetal's) Angina
Variant angina is rare. It usually occurs while you're at rest. The pain can be severe. It usually happens between midnight and early morning. This type of angina is relieved by medicine.
Overview
Angina occurs equally in men and women. It can be a sign of heart disease, even when initial tests don't show evidence of CAD.
Not all chest pain or discomfort is angina. A heart attack, lung problems (such as an infection or a blood clot), heartburn, or a panic attack also can cause chest pain or discomfort. All chest pain should be checked by a doctor.
Other Names for Angina
* Angina pectoris
* Acute coronary syndrome
* Chest pain
* Coronary artery spasms
* Prinzmetal's angina
* Stable or common angina
* Unstable angina
* Variant angina
How Is Angina Treated?
Treatments for angina include lifestyle changes, medicines, medical procedures, and cardiac rehabilitation (rehab). The main goals of treatment are to:
* Reduce pain and discomfort and how often it occurs
* Prevent or lower the risk of heart attack and death by treating the underlying heart condition
Lifestyle changes and medicines may be the only treatments needed if your symptoms are mild and aren't getting worse. When lifestyle changes and medicines don't control angina, you may need medical procedures or cardiac rehab.
Unstable angina is an emergency condition that requires treatment in the hospital.
Lifestyle Changes
Making lifestyle changes can help prevent episodes of angina. You can:
* Slow down or take rest breaks if angina comes on with exertion.
* Avoid large meals and rich foods that leave you feeling stuffed if angina comes on after a heavy meal.
* Try to avoid situations that make you upset or stressed if angina comes on with stress. Learn ways to handle stress that can't be avoided.
You also can make lifestyle changes that help lower your risk of heart disease. An important lifestyle change is adopting a healthy diet. This will help prevent or reduce high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and obesity.
Follow a heart healthy eating plan that focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or no-fat diary products, and lean meat and fish. The plan also should be low in salt, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.
Your doctor may recommend TLC if you have high cholesterol or the DASH eating plan if you have high blood pressure. Even if you don't have these conditions, you can still benefit from these heart healthy plans.
Other important lifestyle changes include:
* Quitting smoking, if you smoke. Avoid secondhand smoke.
* Being physically active. Check with your doctor to find out how much and what kinds of activity are safe for you.
* Losing weight, if you're overweight or obese.
* Taking all medicines as your doctor prescribes, especially if you have diabetes.
Medicines
Nitrates are the most commonly used medicines to treat angina. They relax and widen blood vessels. This allows more blood to flow to the heart while reducing its workload.
Nitroglycerin is the most commonly used nitrate for angina. Nitroglycerin that dissolves under your tongue or between your cheeks and gum is used to relieve an angina episode. Nitroglycerin in the form of pills and skin patches is used to prevent attacks of angina. These forms of nitroglycerin act too slowly to relieve pain during an angina attack.
You also may need other medicines to treat angina. These medicines may include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, oral antiplatelet (an-ty-PLAYT-lit) medicines, and anticoagulants (AN-te-ko-AG-u-lants). These medicines can help:
* Lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels
* Slow the heart rate
* Relax blood vessels
* Reduce strain on the heart
* Prevent blood clots from forming
Medical Procedures
When medicines and other treatments don't control angina, you may need a medical procedure to treat the underlying heart disease. Angioplasty (AN-jee-oh-plas-tee) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are both commonly used to treat angina.
Angioplasty opens blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. During angioplasty, a thin tube with a balloon or other device on the end is threaded through a blood vessel to the narrowed or blocked coronary artery. Once in place, the balloon is inflated to push the plaque outward against the wall of the artery. This widens the artery and restores blood flow.
Angioplasty can improve blood flow to your heart, relieve chest pain, and possibly prevent a heart attack. Sometimes a small mesh tube called a stent is placed in the artery to keep it open after the procedure.
During CABG, healthy arteries or veins taken from other areas in your body are used to bypass (that is, go around) your narrowed coronary arteries. Bypass surgery can improve blood flow to your heart, relieve chest pain, and possibly prevent a heart attack.
Your doctor will help decide which treatment is right for you.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
Your doctor may prescribe cardiac rehab for angina or after angioplasty, CABG, or a heart attack.
The cardiac rehab team may include doctors, nurses, exercise specialists, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, and psychologists or other behavioral therapists.
Rehab has two parts:
* Exercise training. This part helps you learn how to exercise safely, strengthen your muscles, and improve your stamina. Your exercise plan will be based on your individual abilities, needs, and interests.
* Education, counseling, and training. This part of rehab helps you understand your heart condition and find ways to reduce your risk of future heart problems. The cardiac rehab team will help you learn how to cope with the stress of adjusting to a new lifestyle and to deal with your fears about the future.
How Can Angina Be Prevented?
You can prevent or lower your risk for angina and coronary artery disease (CAD) by making lifestyle changes and treating related conditions.
Making Lifestyle Changes
Healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent or delay angina and CAD. To make lifestyle changes, you can:
* Follow a healthy eating plan. (See "How Is Angina Treated" for more information.)
* Quit smoking, if you smoke. Avoid secondhand smoke.
* Be physically active. Check with your doctor to find out how much and what kinds of activity are safe for you.
* Learn ways to handle stress and relax.
Treating Related Conditions
You also can help prevent or delay angina and CAD by treating related conditions, such as:
* High blood cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol, follow your doctor's advice about lowering it. Take medicines as directed to lower your cholesterol.
* High blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, follow your doctor's advice about keeping your blood pressure under control. Take blood pressure medicines as directed.
* Diabetes. If you have diabetes, follow your doctor's advice about keeping your blood sugar level under control. Take medicines as directed.
* Overweight or obesity. If you're overweight or obese, talk to your doctor about how to lose weight safely.
